Brain feels seasons

Not only mood, but also the activity of human brain depend on the season. To perform certain tasks the brain spends different amounts of resources, more or less - depending on the season, told scientists in the journal PNAS, said health info with reference to Tests have shown that learning by heart fragments of the sequences, the brain is more active in the summer than in the winter. For other tasks the brain will be activated in the fall.

Spring, summer, autumn and winter, not only the natural 24-hour cycle sets the rhythm for our internal clock. Seasons also affect our body and psyche. Studies show that, for example, winter born more left-handers, and May the children are very healthy. Seasonal mood swings can be seen in reports from around the world on Twitter social network. Our behavior changes depending on the season. In the cold dark time haunts many melancholy, winter people also tend to eat more.

Scientists led by Christel Meyer (Christelle Meyer) from Liege University investigated the effect of the seasons on our brain function. They proved that even cognitive function body of thought are subject to seasonal changes.

For their study, researchers tested the cognitive functions of 28 healthy volunteers at different times of the year. Actually, originally planned to figure out how insomnia affects brain activity. Given the fact that the tests were distributed evenly throughout the year, and scientists could analyze the effect of the seasons on the activities of our heads.

Each time, the subjects spent four and a half days in the laboratory - in isolation from the environment and without daylight. During that time, they had to solve two problems, and Meyer and colleagues examined their brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

In the first task, participants had to quickly react to a visual stimulus, which suddenly appeared on the screen - the process, although simple, but requires concentration and maximum attention. Thanks to the second test the scientists controlled by complex functions: the subjects had to remember the sequence of the letters read.

The results of the success with which the test passed the task, did not depend on the time of year. According to the findings of scientists, each score remained largely stable and good.

However, for MRI images found large differences in the brain activity of participants in the experiment: those areas of the brain that affect attention, in June were the most active, and during the winter solstice - calm, in particular, we are talking about the amygdala.

But the activity that scientists have linked to working memory, reached its peak in the autumn. In the spring of this area, solving the same problem, it was less active.

The increased activity, scientists say, suggests that the brain focuses more resources to perform a specific task. That is, the cognitive advances are the brain in different ways: more or less - it depends on the time of year.

"In addition the time of day, time of year and also affects cognitive brain function, at least on the results indicate this - write the researchers. - Seasonal rhythms is not the same for different functions, they are more process-specific. "
